Geography is defined as the study of Earth's physical features, weather systems, natural resources, and human populations. The field is broadly divided into 22 primary categories: Physical Geography and Human Geography. Physical Geography itself is subdivided into 33 distinct categories, which consist of Cartography, Topography, and Meteorology (also recorded as Meterology).

Cartography is defined as the study of the production of maps, political boundaries, and latitudinal and longitudinal lines. Topography is the study of the features of the earth's surface. Meteorology is the study of the atmosphere, weather, and climate. Human beings are an essential aspect of geography because they inhabit, adapt to, modify, and organize Earth's physical spaces into distinct political, economic, cultural, and historical categories.

Cartography, Map Projections, and Map Elements

Geographic spaces are represented through globes and maps. A globe is a sphere and represents the most accurate representation of the earth's surface. Map projections are flat drawings of the earth's surface. Specific map projections serve different functions: the Mercator projection preserves the shape of the areas, with latitude and longitude lines meeting at right angles, whereas the Robinson projection preserves the size of the areas.

Maps are classified based on the features they highlight. Physical maps highlight natural landforms, elevation, and bodies of water. Political maps show human-drawn nation borders and major cities. Maps utilize key tools for navigation and reading: a map legend is a box that explains various symbols used on a detailed map, and a bar scale is used to determine the number of miles or kilometers in every inch of map space. Spatial directions are classified into cardinal directions, which are North, South, East, and West, and intermediate directions, which consist of Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest.

Geographic Coordinates, Hemispheres, and Solar Dynamics

Geographic positioning is expressed through relative location and absolute location. Relative location refers to a place's location in relation to another place. Absolute location uses latitude and longitude lines to give the exact location of a place. Latitude lines, also known as parallels, run east-west around the globe parallel to each other and measure distances north and south from the equator. Longitude lines, also known as meridians, run east-west in orientation, range from 0o0^\text{o} to 180o180^\text{o} east or west, and converge together at the north poles.

The globe is divided into 44 hemispheres, where a hemisphere is defined as half of the earth. The equator is located at 0o0^\text{o} latitude and divides Earth into the Northern and Southern hemispheres. The Prime Meridian circles the globe at 0o0^\text{o} longitude and divides Earth into the Western and Eastern hemispheres. Earth's axis is tilted at 2312o23\frac{1}{2}^\text{o}. The earth's tilt determines how much sunlight reaches regions, as well as the occurrence of the seasons. A Winter Solstice occurs on the shortest and longest days of the year. Because the equator is situated at 0o0^\text{o}, it receives almost the same daylight amount throughout the year.

Geology is defined as the study of Earth's solid physical composition, including the core, mantle, lithospheric crust, and rock formations. Terra firma refers to solid landmass or dry ground as distinguished from oceans or the atmosphere.

Plate tectonics is the theory that Earth's outer crust is divided into massive subterranean (subterrianean) plates moving continuously over the asthenosphere (asthenosphac). Faults are fractures in Earth's crust where subterranean plate slippage triggers earthquakes and massive sea waves, known as tsunamis (tsunamics).

Human Geography, Demographics, and Social Categories

Human geography analyzes how people organize physical spaces into various operational categories. Cultural categories encompass religion, language, music, literature, cuisine, and related cultural elements. Economic categories encompass industry, infrastructure, natural resources, gross domestic product (GDP), and related factors. Political categories include forms of government and country boundaries. Historical categories encompass cultural, economic, and political history.

Demographics is defined as the study of human population traits, including growth, birth and death rates, population density, and migration patterns. Social classifications within human geography differentiate between ethnicity and race. Ethnicity refers to shared cultural heritage, ancestral origin, and language. Race refers to broad biological physical characteristics.
