Noun: a person, place, thing, or idea

Pronoun: a word that replaces the noun (he, she, ect…)

Verb: a word used to express a state of being or an action (also known as a linking verb)

common linking verbs: be, being, am, is, are, was, were

less common linking verbs:

appear, become, feel, stay, grow, look, remain, taste, seem, smell, sound, turn

Adjective: a word that describes the noun and answers: which one? how many? what kind?

Adverb: a word that describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb and answers: how? when? where? why? to what extent?

Conjunction: a word that connects sentences or words together

Preposition: words that are used before a noun to add description or connection to something in the sentence

Interjection: a word that shows emotion (wow, bang, ah…)

PN: a noun following a linkibg verb, replaces the subject

PA: an adjective following a linking verb, describes the subject

Appositives: a group of words like nouns that further identify nouns

DO: a noun phrase denoting a person or thing that is the recipient of the action of a transitive verb, for example the dog in Jimmy fed the dog.

IO: a noun phrase referring to someone or something that is affected by the action of a transitive verb (typically as a recipient), but is not the primary object (e.g. him in give him the book)

OP: the noun or pronoun, usually following the preposition, that the preposition links to the other element in the sentence.

Infinitives: the basic form of a verb

Gerunds: a form that is derived from a verb but that functions as a noun, in English ending in -ing, e.g., asking in do you mind my asking you?

Participle: a word formed from a verb (e.g., going, gone, being, been ) and used as an adjective (e.g., working woman, burned toast ) or a noun (e.g., good breeding )
