Types of Muscle Tissue
Voluntary Striated Muscle: Skeletal Muscle
  • Definition: Muscle that is attached to the skeleton, facilitating voluntary movement.
  • Characteristics:
    • Striated appearance due to the organization of muscle fibers.
    • Fibers run in parallel arrangements, which contribute to their strength and function.
    • Multinucleated: Each fiber contains multiple nuclei, which aids in muscle repair and function.
  • Function: Enables voluntary control of movements including locomotion and manipulation of the body.
Involuntary Striated Muscle: Cardiac Muscle
  • Definition: Specialized muscle located in the heart.
  • Characteristics:
    • Striated appearance similar to skeletal muscle but with distinct structural features.
    • Uninucleated: Each cardiac muscle cell typically contains a single nucleus.
    • Fibers are branched, interconnected through structures known as intercalated discs which allow for synchronized contraction.
    • Anastomosis: The branching leads to a mesh-like network, enhancing the coordination of heartbeats.
  • Function: Involuntary contraction to pump blood throughout the body.
Smooth (Visceral) Muscle
  • Definition: Muscle that is located in the walls of hollow organs including the gastrointestinal (GI) tract and blood vessels.
  • Characteristics:
    • Not striated; fibers appear smooth under a microscope.
    • Spindle-shaped: The cells taper at both ends, contributing to the overall shape of the tissue.
    • Uninucleated: Each cell contains a single nucleus.
  • Functions:
    • Involuntary control of peristalsis (the wave-like movement that pushes contents through the digestive tract).
    • Vasoconstriction (VC) and Vasodilation (VD) to regulate blood flow.
Muscle Groups in the Head and Neck
  • Orbicularis Oris: A muscle around the mouth, involved in various facial movements such as closing the lips.
  • Temporalis: A muscle located on the side of the head, playing a key role in chewing by elevating the mandible.
  • Sternocleidomastoid: A prominent neck muscle that helps with rotation and flexion of the head and neck.
Muscular Anatomy of the Eye
  • Superior Rectus: Muscle responsible for elevating the eye and rotating it upward.
  • Superior Oblique: A muscle that helps in downward rotation and inward movement of the eye.
  • Lateral Rectus: Responsible for moving the eye outward, away from the nose.
  • Inferior Rectus: Muscle that moves the eye downward.

  • Trochlea: A structure that acts as a pulley for the superior oblique muscle.
  • Lateral Surface: Refers to the side of the right eye, showcasing how these muscles contract to manipulate eye movement.
Anatomy of the Arm and Leg
  • Deltoid: The muscle that gives the shoulder its rounded shape and is responsible for arm abduction, flexion, and extension.
  • Triceps Brachii: A muscle located at the back of the upper arm, essential for extending the elbow.
  • Rectus Abdomini: A prominent muscle in the abdomen that assists with trunk flexion and stabilizes the pelvis when standing and walking.
