achievements

  1. Germany joined the Lon in 1926

  2. managed to reassure France about the whole situation of being unable to pay the 2nd implements of reparations in 1922 and eventually got them to leave in 1924??

  5. was very ahead of its time with the freedom of speech, equal rights to vote and all that

  6. embraced Moree cultural things in Germany like performance art, cafes, music, which was really considered disgraceful to the right wing politics

the beginning

  1. after the war Germany was in shambles (October 1918)

  2. mutinies in the navy and army had started

  3. the kiezer had abdicated and fled to the Netherlands

  4. the government wasn’t able at all

  5. then a guy called Friedrich abert rose into power he then created the social Democratic Party

  6. this was the largest party by 1919 however Germany was still in chaos so the national?? met in the city of weimar to form a constitution called the weimar government

  7. Abert had helped stabilise the economy a bit

  8. however in 1922 Germany had failed to pay its 2nd impliment of reparations and this made the french sun and they and the Belgians invaded the rhur which was a major coal mining area and the idea was to seize all the coal reserves in the rhur this majorly backfired and caused economic instability

  9. the germans started boycotting working/taking orders form the fench and they ended up kicking out 160,000 germans

  10. the government decided to start printing more and more money to try and fix the economic instability but this just caused hyperinflation in 1923 and people even resorted to bater trade again

    stressemans arrival

  1. then a guy named Gustav stresseman rose to power and became the chancellor for a bit in {1924} and was able to turn the whole situation around

  2. he had changed the currency to the rentenmark which was based off of that years values of wheat. this helped the economy a bit

  3. and then in April 1924 he had brought in the Dawes plan which basically involved taking out loans from the American government worth 600 million gold marks and this was to help kick start the economy and lay the foundations for industrialisation

  4. stresseman was applauded by this as the next 6 years were considered a time of economic revival

  5. and for the first time in 1928 Germany had passed prewar levels of inflation and all that jazz

the weimar being a bit controversial

  1. they had brought in the idea of proportional representation where the number of votes was equivalent to the number of seats in the reichstag. it was thought to be fair

  2. however it allowed small extremest parties to have a foot in the door of power

  3. this meant that you couldn’t win 50% of votes

  4. this also made a coalition government which can cause some uncertainty and instability in politics

  1. article 48 allowed the President to declare a state of emergency in Germany in times of national danger and to rule as a dictator for short periods of time.

  2. article 48 which gave the president wayyy to much power

  3. so much so that he could even replace the political system if he wanted to

  4. **and the decrease in presidency led to the undermining of the role that he would/should play

  5. however the weimar was very ahead of its time

  6. as it allowed for freedom of worship, freedom of speech, free public metings and everyone was allowed to vote

  7. they embraced the cultural aspects of Germany like art, drama, music cafes and all od that

  8. this was however considered disgraceful by the right wing politics

the fall of the weimar

  1. the weimar began to fall in October 1929 with the Wall Street crash and all the loans America had sent out got recalled

  2. this caused a world wide economic recession and Germany was hit the hardest

  3. this is because of the daws plan and how the whole economy was based off of the American dollar so the economy crumbled

  4. and the employment rates were already high

  5. and the farming sector was actually non existent

  6. so the government tried to fix the economy by printing more money which ended up causing a realy bad inflation

  7. taxes went up, wages were low the social democrats in the weimar had retracted completely and so did other membersof other parties

  8. this is what caused the nazi party to rise in popularity
