Mead Concept List

Symbolic Interaction
Definition: Although these pages do not give “symbolic interaction” as a separate heading, Mead’s core argument is clear: people do not merely react mechanically to stimuli, but interact through shared symbols, language, and their understanding of others’ attitudes; in other words, action, thought, and self are formed through meaningful interaction.

Why it is important: This concept matters because it treats society as an ongoing process of meaning-making rather than as a purely external structure imposed on individuals; for Mead, both the mind and the self are not born as isolated entities, but emerge gradually through social interaction.

Real-life example: On social media, a “seen” without a reply, an emoji, or a like is not just a physical act, but a symbol carrying social meaning; people interpret those symbols, infer others’ attitudes, and then adjust their own responses, which is exactly symbolic interaction.

Significant Symbols
Definition: Significant symbols are symbols that not only call out a response in others but also call out a similar response in the speaker; Mead especially emphasizes the vocal gesture in language because it allows the individual, when producing the symbol, to evoke within themselves the attitude likely to arise in others.

Why it is important: This concept matters because without significant symbols there would be no genuine common meaning and no stable social coordination; people can understand rules, roles, rights, and obligations only because they share the meanings behind these symbols.

Real-life example: A red light meaning stop and a green light meaning go is a good example of significant symbols; when drivers see the red light, they know others interpret it as “stop,” and they themselves act according to that same shared meaning.

The Conversation of Gestures
Definition: The conversation of gestures refers to the interactive process in which actors exchange gestures and responses back and forth; responses are already taking place at this stage, but they have not yet become fully clear, self-conscious, and symbolized thought. Mead even says that thinking can be understood as this conversation of gestures once it is internalized within the individual.

Why it is important: This concept matters because it explains that “thought” is not a purely inner activity detached from society, but the result of social interaction being brought inside the individual; in other words, the human mind is social through and through.

Real-life example: When two people argue, one raises their voice and the other immediately becomes defensive, fights back, goes silent, or withdraws, that back-and-forth is a conversation of gestures; later, when you replay the argument alone and imagine what the other person would say, that process has been internalized.

Mind
Definition: For Mead, the mind is not a private thing sealed inside the brain, but a capacity that emerges within the social process; it arises from the individual’s ability to take the attitudes of others and to carry on an “internalized conversation of gestures” in deciding how to act.

Why it is important: This concept matters because it directly challenges the idea that isolated individuals come first and society comes later; Mead argues the reverse, that social communication makes the mind possible in the first place, and only then can individuals truly think, judge, and reflect.

Real-life example: Before emailing a professor, you may think, “If I phrase it like this, will it sound rude?” or “How will they interpret this?”; that process of simulating another person’s response before deciding what to say is Mead’s mind in action.

Self
Definition: The self is not an innate and fixed essence, but something formed within social relations; Mead says the self emerges as the individual organizes the attitudes of others, the common responses of the group, and social rules within themselves, so the self is fundamentally a social process.

Why it is important: This concept matters because it explains why “who I am” cannot be separated from “how others view me” and “what community I belong to”; without others, shared attitudes, and group life, there can be no full self in Mead’s sense.

Real-life example: A university student’s sense of self is usually not just “what I personally like,” but also “I am a student,” “I am a friend,” “I am a daughter/son,” and “I am a member of a community”; these identities come from relations with others rather than from isolation.

Play, Game, and Generalized Other
Definition: In the stage of play, the child takes on different roles one after another, such as teacher, parent, or hero, but these roles are still loose and not systematically organized; in the stage of game, the child must understand all the participants’ roles and rules at once and organize their attitudes into a whole. Mead calls this organized group attitude the generalized other, meaning the attitude of the whole community.

Why it is important: This concept matters because it shows how the self develops from merely imitating specific others to internalizing the rules of the group as a whole; only when the individual learns to view themselves from the standpoint of the generalized other can a fuller, more stable, and more coordinated self emerge.

Real-life example: When children play house, they may be the mother one moment and the teacher the next, which is closer to play; but when they actually join a soccer game, they must understand how the forward, defender, referee, teammates, rules, and shared goal fit together, which is game, and the shared perspective that “everyone is expected to follow the rules” is the generalized other.

The Me and the I
Definition: The Me is the organized set of internalized attitudes of others and social expectations, or “the social side of me”; the I is my response to those attitudes, the side marked by initiative, creativity, and unpredictability. Mead says that the self is made up of these two phases together.

Why it is important: This concept matters because it explains why people both conform to society and generate new responses to it; if there were only the me, people would become overly mechanical and conformist, and if there were only the I, they could not stably belong to any community. Mead sees the real self as constantly moving between social normativity and personal creativity.

Real-life example: In a class discussion, you know that you are expected to respect the professor, wait your turn, and stay on topic, and those internalized rules are the me; but when you finally offer a fresh point, perhaps even one that challenges the classroom consensus, that concrete and novel response is the I.
