Postmodernist and New Right views on the birth and fertility rate???
· Postmodernist view on BR and FR – they emphasise individualism, B&BG say individual construct their own lifestyles and relationships are no longer tied to traditional social norms, so they have the choice to have children. They believe that there is less social stigma around not having children and there is more individual choice - B&BG suggest there is risk in relationships and economic wellbeing when having children. AO3 – New Right argue the decline in nuclear family threatens society.
· New Right view on BR and FR – they are concerned by the increase in births outside of marriage and claim children born inside a nuclear family are happier and healthier, otherwise it is an unstable institution. They think the Sex Discrimination Act (1975) and Equal Pay Act (1970) have distracted women from their ‘natural calling’ and feminism has resulted in maternal deprivation (less bond with child). They also stigmatise lone parent families due to a lacking male role model. AO3 – ignores family diversity, people should have a choice, patriarchal and secularisation.
