fight or flight

defination: a physiological and psychological response to threatening environmental stimuli

the way an animal responds to stress. the body becomes ready to fight and agresor or flee.

this is extended to fight, flight, freeze or fawn (fawn is people pleasing to get out of a situation)

adrenaline

stimulates heart rate, contracts blood vessles, dialates air ways,

is produced when stressed

how fight or flight occurs

the sensor is perceived which causes tho hypothalamus to trigger activity in the ANS leading to the ANS changing to a sympathetic state this releases adrenaline from the adrenal gland which causes psychological changes nessasary for fight or flight.

once the threat has passed the parasympathetic (break or rest & digest) nervous system returns the body to its resting state, its actions are antagonistic to the sympathetic nervous system

effects of fight or flight on the body

  • pupils dialate

  • heart rate increase

  • inhibits saliva

  • bronci dialates

  • glucogen converts into glucose

  • digestion is slowed
