Overview of the Nervous System

Introduction

  • The nervous system is fundamental for gathering sensory information, processing it, and producing appropriate responses, which can bevoluntary or involuntary.

Functions of the Nervous System

  • Gather Sensory Information: Collects both internal and external stimuli.

  • Process Information: Filters and interprets the received information.

  • Produce a Response: Generates a response based on processed information, which may be voluntary (conscious control) or involuntary (automatic responses).

Information Flow

  • Electrical Current: The basis of communication in the nervous system is through electrical impulses.

  • Nerve Impulse: It is vital for the information flow within the nervous system.

Key Components of Nervous System

  • Sensory Input: The intake of stimuli from the environment or body.

  • Integration: The process of receiving and interpreting sensory information.

  • Motor Output: The outputs generated in response to sensory inputs, affecting muscle movements or gland activities.

Organization of the Nervous System

Central Nervous System (CNS)

  • Comprises the brain and spinal cord.

  • Acts as the main processing center for the entire nervous system.

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

  • Comprises all nerves not located within the CNS.

  • Functions as a communication hotline to and from the CNS.

  • Includes:

    • Spinal Nerves: Nerves that emerge from the spinal cord.

    • Cranial Nerves: Nerves that emerge directly from the brain.

Functional Classification

  • Afferent Nerves:

    • Send sensory impulses to the CNS.

    • Types of Afferent Fibers:

    • Somatic Afferent Fibers: Transmit sensory signals from skin, muscles, and joints.

    • Visceral Afferent Fibers: Carry sensory impulses from the internal organs.

  • Efferent Nerves:

    • Carry impulses away from the CNS.

    • Two main types:

    • Somatic Efferent Nerves: Control voluntary movements of skeletal muscles.

    • Autonomic Efferent Nerves: Control involuntary actions, further divided into:

      • Sympathetic Nervous System: Prepares the body for fight or flight scenarios (e.g., increases heart rate, dilates pupils).

      • Parasympathetic Nervous System: Promotes 'rest and digest' functions (e.g., conserves energy, slows heart rate).

Components of the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)

  • Cranial Nerves: Nerves that perform various functions including sensory and motor functions for the head and neck.

  • Spinal Nerves: Nerves that transmit messages between the spinal cord and the rest of the body.

  • Ganglia: Clusters of neuron cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system.

  • Somatic Nervous System: Responsible for voluntary control of body movements via skeletal muscles:

    • Proprioceptive Information: Sensory input providing awareness of body position and movement from muscles and joints.

  • Visceral Nervous System: Involuntary control over internal organs.
