Air pollution
During combustion of hydrocarbons, the carbon and hydrogen in these compounds are oxidised so carbon dioxide and water vapour are released into the atmosphere
In incomplete combustion, solid particles of soot and carbon monoxide can be produced as well as carbon dioxide.
Particles in the air can cause problems:
If they’re inhaled they can get stuck in the lungs and cause damage, this can lead to respiratory problems
Bad for environment, reflect light from sun back, cause global dimming.
Carbon monoxide can stop blood from carrying oxygen around your body.
Does this by binding to haemoglobin so less oxygen can.
Sulfur dioxide is released into combustion of fossil fuels
Nitrogen oxide are created from a reaction between nitrogen and oxygen in the air
Gases mix with clouds forms dilute sulfuric/nitrate acid, falls as acid rain
Acid rain kills plants damages buildings and makes metal corrode
Can cause respiratory problems
