biology vocab unit 1 nature of science

 1. HOMEOSTASIS - the regulation system of a living organism

2.  EVOLUTION - the gradual changes acquired with time to living organisms

3. CELL - the basic unit of life; like the puzzle piece of a puzzle

4. EUKARYOTE - a more complex organism or unit of life; has a nucleus

5. PROKARYOTE - a more simplified unit of life; lacks a nucleus

6. CELL MEMBRANE - a protective barrier around the cell (made of lipids)

7. SEXUAL REPRODUCTION - reproduction by blending the genes of two sexes that are different

8. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION - reproduction that does not require blending of the genes; undifferentiated genes are passed

9. ORGANISM - an entity that is alive and can operate by itself

10. NUCLEUS - an organelle found in eukaryotic cells which contains DNA

11. DNA - the biological genetic coding that directs an organism’s cell functions12. METABOLISM - the way an organism transforms food into energy

13. GROW -  - when a living organism sequentially develops into maturity

14. DEVELOP - Advancement in growth and the “growth” stages

15. HYPOTHESIS - a developed, supported, and educated explanation for an observation that is used as a foundation for an experiment

16. INFERENCE - after an observation, a quick guess as to why the event happened the way it did

17. OBSERVATION - noticing an event using the 5 senses, usually piques interest -> experiment

18. QUALITATIVE DATA - data that generally collected using non-numerical means; achieved by an observation using the 5 senses or self-reflection

19 QUANTITATIVE DATA - data that is generally collected through numerical means

20. INDEPENDENT VARIABLE - the variable that is manipulated in order to get a specific result

21. DEPENDENT VARIABLE - the variable that is affected by the independent variable

22. CONTROLLED VARIABLE - the variables that are regulated to avoid a result being affected by an unregulated variable
