Human Development Index (HDI)- A measure of economic and social well-being on a scale of 0-1. HDI factors include life expectancy, education levels and average income
Gross Domestic Product (GDP)-The value of all goods and services produced within a country in one year
Population Rise-the birth year minus the death rate
Literacy rate percentage of people who can read and write
Life expectancy- the age of which a newborn infant can expect to live
Lesson 1
Minority- a group of people, who because of physical or cultural traits are differentiated from the dominant group in society and treated unequally.
List the 5 characteristics of a minority
Distinct physical or cultural characteristics
Minority Dominated by Majority- The best jobs are harder to get because of lack of education or unfair family practices
Common sense of identity and strong group loyalty
Minority Dominated by Majority- majority may justify job discrimination by depicting the minority as lazy
Membership in the minority group is an ascribed status applied @ birth.
Race-People sharing certain inherited physical characteristics .
Ethnic minority-Groups identified by cultural, national, or religious characterisitcs
Know the difference between race and ethnic minority
Ethnocentrism-Judging others in terms to one’s own group
Lesson 2
Assimilation- blending or fusing of a minority group into dominant society
Acculturation- culture is passed on to a new generation
Cultural pluralism-The desire of a group to maintain some sense of identity separate from the dominant group
Accommodation- A choice by a minority group to maintain its own cultural unique way of lids independent of the dominant (Amish in PA)
Melting pot vs Salad bowl theory- Melting pot is all ethnic and racial minorites voluntarily blend together, but the salad bowl is different traditions and cultures exists side by side
Subjugation- The process by which by a minority group is denied equal access to the benefits of a society
De jure segregation- the denial of equal access based on the law
De facto segregation- the denial of equal acess based on common prejudice
Population transfer- 16,000 Cherokee were forced to march from the south east of the United States to Oklahoma (4,000 died).
Genocide- the systemic effort to destroy an entire population.

Know the difference between the following terms:
Bias- negative or positive preconceptions
hate crime-criminal act motivated by extreme prejudice
Prejudice-closely held negative attitudes towards a group and its individual memebers
self-fulfilling prophecy-an expectation that leads to behavior that causes the expectation to become reality
Racism-an extreme form of prejudice that assumes the superiority of one racial group over others
Discrimination- unfair treatment of a minority group by the dominant group
Stereotyping- labeling of a group based on distorted, exaggerated, or over simplified ideas of that group
Lesson 4:
Native Americans- population transfer- force onto reservations, made $ in casino businesses
Latinos- Mexico, Central America, South America, and Caribbean islands, fastest growing minority group
African-Americans- Fought for equal rights in the 1960s.
Asian Americans- Chinese, Japanese, Filipinos largest, most successful in regards to educations
Institutionalized discrimination- unfair practices due to structure of society
Hidden employment- part time or self-employed but want to be full time
Under class- poor for generations
