Silence in Counselling
Silence in Counselling
Definition: Silence in counselling refers to periods of quietness that give the helpee (the person receiving help) the opportunity to express their issues without being interrupted.
Importance:
- Processing: Silence allows the helpee to process their thoughts and feelings without distractions.
- Clarity: This processing aids the helpee in gaining clarity regarding their difficulties and contemplating possible solutions.
Use of Silence
- Cultural Influences:
- Society often teaches individuals to feel uncomfortable in silence, impacting both the helper’s (the person providing help) use of silence and the helpee’s response.
Reasons for Silence
For the Helper:
- Deliberate Encouragement:
- Silence may be used intentionally to encourage the helpee’s self-exploration and deeper reflection on their issues.
- Carrying the Burden:
- This technique can help the helpee to “carry the burden” of the conversation, allowing them to take ownership of their feelings and perspectives.
- Thought Collection:
- Silence provides a moment for the helper to gather her/his own thoughts and formulate responses.
- Natural Discussion Progression:
- Silence can signify a natural conclusion to a segment of discussion, creating a transition to the next topic.
For the Helpee:
- Connection Making:
- Silence enables the helpee time to make connections between thoughts or feelings, facilitating deeper understanding.
- Nurturing Feelings:
- It can act as a nurturing space where the helpee’s feelings are able to develop and evolve.
- Emotional Recovery:
- The helpee can use this time to recover from immediate emotions tied to the "here and now" situation being discussed.
- Eliciting Responses:
- Silence may be an attempt by the helpee to prompt the helper into providing a response, such as seeking approval, feedback, or advice.
- Personal Reflection:
- The helpee may use silence to organize her/his thoughts, recall past events, evaluate personal values, and reflect on feelings, enhancing self-awareness and insight.
