Patterns in Atoms: Examination of atomic structures reveals patterns that explicate the properties of elements as well as their behavior during chemical reactions.
Physical State of Elements:
- A primary characteristic of elements is their physical state.
- Most metals are solids at room temperature, showcasing a distinct pattern.
- Mercury Exception:
- Mercury is a metal that diverges from this norm because it has a low melting point, which causes it to be a liquid at room temperature (depicted in Figure 4.1).
