Proximity

  • perceive objects are belonging together when they are close to one another

Similarity

  • group objects that have similar characteristics

Closure

  • group disconnect pieces of info into whole

Apparent Movement: Phi Phenomenon

  • The illusion of movement created by presenting visual stimuli in rapid succession

Binocular Cues

  • info take in by both eyes

  • Depth Perception

    • ability to gauge length, width, and depth and to judge how far away an object is

  • Visual Cliff

    • a psychological experiment used to assess depth perception in infants and animals

Monocular Cues

  • cues to help us perceive depth without need of both eyes

  • Linear

    • lines that seems to converge in an image

  • Clarity

    • nearby objects are clearer than more distant objects

  • Relative height

    • near objects are low in visual field; more distant are higher up

  • Texture Gradient

    • texture of objects seem to change with distance

  • Relative Size

    • an object’s size is larger, determined to be closer

  • Interposition

    • objects that are obscured by other objects are perceived as being farther
