Development of Self in Babies and Children

  • Infants are not born with a sense of self.

    • They do not understand that they have a self that is separate from their caregivers.

Development of Self Understanding

  1. First Understanding of Self:

    • Based on a baby's ability to make things happen.

    • Example: Babies in high chairs learn that throwing objects results in caregivers retrieving them or dogs eating food off the floor.

  2. Second Understanding of Self:

    • Based on a baby's ability to think about themselves.

    • Measured through:

      • Self Recognition: The ability to recognize oneself in a mirror.

      • Example: A baby looks in a mirror, may not recognize themselves initially, especially if under 18 months old.
