Florida Highway Safety Notes
Traffic Lanes
Drive in the right lane on two-lane highways unless overtaking.
On four or more lane roads, use right lanes except when passing.
Center lane of three/five-lane highways is for left turns only.
Red Reflectors
Red reflectors on lane lines indicate wrong side of the road.
Red reflectors on edge lines indicate wrong way on ramps; pull over and turn around safely.
Safe Following Distance
Maintain a minimum following distance of 4 seconds under normal conditions.
Increase following distance in: wet conditions, low visibility, heavy loads, following buses/trucks.
Blind Spots
Areas near vehicle's rear corners not visible in mirrors.
Check blind spots before changing lanes or passing.
Avoid driving in others' blind spots; stay visible.
Passing Vehicles
Signal before moving into the left lane.
Maintain a safe distance behind the vehicle to pass.
Check blind spots before passing, return only when safe.
Passing on the right is legal with two/more lanes or when the vehicle turns left.
Being Passed
Do not speed up when being passed.
Move to the right to give room to passing vehicles.
Florida law mandates moving out of the left lane when overtaken.
Limited Access Highways
Signal and check for openings when merging onto a highway.
Accelerate to merge; yield right-of-way to highway traffic.
Do not stop in acceleration lane unless necessary.
Exiting Limited Access Highways
Use the exit lane; most exits on the right.
Activate turn signal and slow in the deceleration lane.
Avoid last-minute exits; continue to the next exit if missed.
Interstate Safety Reminders
Plan routes and know exit locations via mile markers.
Drive in right lane; pass left; watch for entering traffic.
Avoid tailgating to reduce rear-end collision risks.
