water potential vocab

hydration shell - dynamic layers of water molecules that form around a dissolved ion or molecule

  • are arranged in specific orientation due to attractive forces

dissolution - process of solute particles moving & becoming evenly dispersed in a solvent

osmosis - movement of water through a selectively permeable membrane from area of low solute concentration to area of high solute concentration

  • water also moves from area of high water potential to area of low water potential

crenated - state of an animal cell shriveling & shrinking due to water loss

plasmolysis - shrinking of cell membrane away from cell wall, as a result of water loss

turgor pressure - pressure against a cell wall by a fluid in the cell

plasmolysis - cell wall shrinks away from the cell membrane due to a loss of water in the plant cell

water potential - a measure of potential energy of water, resulting from the solute potential & pressure potential

solute potential - tendency of water to move from area of low solute concentration to area of high solute concentration

  • also refers to the attraction of water molecules to solute particles

  • lots of solute particles reduces the number of free water molecules & limits the movement of water

pressure potential - pressure that water exerts on a cell membrane

  • also called the turgor pressure
