Glycolipids

Glycolipids

  • Glycolipids are similar to sphingolipids, sharing a sphingosine base.
  • The key difference is the absence of a phosphate group, distinguishing them from sphingolipids.
  • The R group in glycolipids is formed by the attachment of one to six sugar units (carbohydrates), hence the 'glyco' prefix.
  • In contrast, sphingolipids have alcohol groups that form the R group.
  • Glycolipids are primarily located in the outer layer of the plasma membrane, not in the inner layer facing the cytoplasm. The reasons of having lipids in both layers versus only one layer will be discussed later.
