Anatomical Regional Terms Study Notes

Overview of Anatomical Regional Terms

Anatomical regional terms provide a precise, standardized language for describing specific body areas, landmarks, and relative locations on the human body. Body regions are categorized primarily into anterior (ventral/front) and posterior (dorsal/back) views relative to standard anatomical position.

Cephalic and Cervical Regions

The cephalic region encompasses the entire head structure, whereas the cervical region refers to the neck.

  • Cephalic: Refers collectively to the head.
  • Frontal: Forehead region.
  • Orbital: Eye socket and surrounding ocular region.
  • Nasal: Nose area.
  • Oral: Mouth region.
  • Buccal: Cheek region of the face.
  • Otic: Ear region.
  • Mental: Chin region.
  • Occipital: Posterior aspect or base of the head/skull.
  • Cervical: Neck region connecting the head to the torso.

Anterior Trunk and Pelvic Regions

The anterior trunk contains major body cavities housing vital organs across the chest, abdomen, and pelvic regions.

  • Thoracic: Chest region, encompassing the area bounded by the ribcage superior to the diaphragm.
  • Axillary: Armpit area where the arm meets the trunk.
  • Mammary: Breast region located on the anterior chest.
  • Abdominal: Anterior region of the trunk inferior to the thorax and superior to the pelvis.
  • Umbilical: Navel area located at the center of the abdomen.
  • Pelvic: Region of the trunk bounded by the pelvis, inferior to the abdominal cavity.
  • Pubic: Genital area located at the anterior base of the pelvis.

Posterior Trunk and Dorsal Regions

The posterior trunk comprises the dorsal structures along the spine, shoulders, lower back, and buttocks.

  • Acromial: Highest point of the shoulder.
  • Scapular: Region overlaying the shoulder blade (scapula).
  • Vertebral: Region extending along the spinal column.
  • Lumbar: Lower back region between the ribs and the pelvic crest.
  • Sacral: Posterior region between the hips, overlying the sacrum.
  • Gluteal: Buttock region.

Upper Extremity Regions

The upper limb regions extend from the shoulder down to the hand and fingers.

  • Brachial: Arm region between the shoulder and the elbow.
  • Antecubital: Anterior fold of the elbow joint.
  • Olecranal: Posterior point/surface of the elbow joint.
  • Antebrachial: Forearm region between the elbow and wrist.
  • Carpal: Wrist region.
  • Digital: Fingers (digits of the hand).

Lower Extremity Regions

The lower limb regions extend from the hip girdle down to the feet and toes.

  • Coxal: Hip region.
  • Inguinal: Groin region, marking the junction of the thigh with the lower trunk.
  • Femoral: Thigh region extending from the hip to the knee.
  • Patellar: Anterior knee region (kneecap area).
  • Crural: Anterior leg region (shin area between knee and ankle).
  • Sural: Posterior leg region (calf area).
  • Tarsal: Ankle region.
  • Pedal: Foot region.
  • Digital: Toes (digits of the foot).
