1.2.5 Reactions of Alkanes, Alkenes & Alkynes

Substitution of Alkanes

Ex 1: Chloromethane + Hydrogen Chloride

Addition of Alkenes / Alkynes
  • Hydrogenation: Hydrogen atoms added to either side of a double/triple bond
  • Halogenation: Halogen (bromine, chlorine) added to double/triple bond
      * Alkyne → Halogenated Alkene → Alkyl Halide
  • Hydration: Water reacts with alkene/alkyne, producing an alcohol (contains –OH group)
      * Markovnikov’s Rule: the rich get richer.
