1.2.5 Reactions of Alkanes, Alkenes & Alkynes
Substitution of Alkanes

Addition of Alkenes / Alkynes
Hydrogenation: Hydrogen atoms added to either side of a double/triple bond
Halogenation: Halogen (bromine, chlorine) added to double/triple bond
- Alkyne → Halogenated Alkene → Alkyl Halide
Hydration: Water reacts with alkene/alkyne, producing an alcohol (contains –OH group)
- Markovnikov’s Rule: the rich get richer.
