  • Son of King John 1 and Queen Philippa
  • 3rd son
  • Mother born in England → he was half Portugal half English
  • Very religious

Prince Henry the Navigator

  • Opened a school of Navigation
  • Hired navigators, cartographers, and cosmographers as teachers
  • Sent his students to explore Africa and made them write it down
  • Never explored himself
  • Spent $$ on school and explorers
  • People began to keep ship’s logs and other records (maps, etc)

His legacy

  • Died penniless 1460
  • Helped Portugal become a leader in exploration
  • Large statue of him in harbor in New Bedford, Massachusetts
  • Young fishermen of Portuguese descent in New England para honor his great exploration spirit
