- 3rd son
- Mother born in England → he was half Portugal half English
- Very religious

Prince Henry the Navigator
- Opened a school of Navigation
- Hired navigators, cartographers, and cosmographers as teachers
- Sent his students to explore Africa and made them write it down
- Never explored himself
- Spent $$ on school and explorers
- People began to keep ship’s logs and other records (maps, etc)

His legacy
- Died penniless 1460
- Helped Portugal become a leader in exploration
- Large statue of him in harbor in New Bedford, Massachusetts
- Young fishermen of Portuguese descent in New England para honor his great exploration spirit
