The Doryphoros

  • life-size (Greek original is over life-size)

  • Roman copy of Greek original

  • Dated 450-440 BC

  • Found in a palaestra (gymnasium) at Pompeii

  • Missing prop - spear - would break the frontal plane

  • In contrapposto

  • Has a tree trunk support that was a Roman addition

Aphrodite from the Agora

  • Over life-size (1.83m)

  • Dated to c.420 to c.410 BC

  • Made from Parian marble

  • Believed to be one of the two statues of her within the Sanctuary of Ares by Pausanias

  • Fragmented - put back together with cement

  • In contrapposto

  • Wearing a himation and chiton.
