Active recall

What i remember from theoretical explanations of the media and crime:

  • Marxist argue media portrays the dominant ideology Media’s emphasis on violent and sexual crime decreases the importance of white collar and corporate crimes, which rarely get reported.

  • Stuart Hall - media divides the classes Deflecting the impact of capitalism

  • Functionalists - moral panic is needed to reset society Moral panic is a way for society to regulate itself. Folk devils can be set as an example to show what can happen to people if they refuse to live by the social rules of society. Folk devils/moral panic = destabilise society by breaking specific guidelines governing acceptable behaviour.

  • Pluralist view - Media does not influence crime, people essentially have their own free will to choose what to view and what not.

  • Post modernists (Baudrillard) argues the media creates a blurred reality, therefore people have no understanding of real crime. E.g. majority of people believe the murder rate to be higher then it actually is.

  • Feminists argue media representation of women is portrayed unjustly due to the dependence women have on men to save them in movies,TV shows etc.. → Oppression

  • Rape victims are often stereotyped as good women (virgins) who had been violated or ‘bad women’ who had led men on.
