Hamlet

Act 1, Scene 1

• Francisco is keeping watch of the castle before retiring for the night to be replaced with Bernardo.

• Bernardo & Marcellus tells Horatio that they have seen a ghost that resembles the late king Hamlet.

  • They also remark about the late king’s activities in Norway, with him going to war with Norway over land and eventually killing the King of Norway, Fortinbras.

• The ghost appears, and Horatio commands it to speak to them, but eventually disappears. Horatio figures that because the ghost resembles the late king, perhaps it will only speak to its living son, Prince Hamlet.
