Defining Populations and Samples

• The Population: Represents the entire group of interest for a statistical study. It encompasses every individual or member within that defined group.

  • In a study regarding the number of study hours, the population consists of all students at "thousand."
  • Gathering data for an entire population is often impractical because it takes a significant amount of time to ask every single member for their data.

• The Sample: A smaller portion, group, or subset of the population.

  • Instead of surveying every student, a subset of $100$ students may be selected.
  • The sample is used to draw conclusions about the population without having to survey every individual.

Understanding Parameters and Statistics

• Parameter: A number that describes a characteristic of the entire population.

  • Memory Aid: Population and Parameter both start with the letter "$P$".
  • Applied Example: If it were possible to survey every student at "thousand" and the resulting data showed they study for an average of $4$ hours per week, the number $4$ is the parameter because it describes the population.

• Statistic: A number that describes a characteristic of a sample.

  • Memory Aid: Sample and Statistic both start with the letter "$S$".
  • Applied Example: If a survey of a sample of $100$ students reveals that they study for an average of $2$ hours per week, the number $2$ is a statistic.
