AP WH 2.1-2.2
Main Focus
The main focus is the causes and effects of the growth of networks of exchange, especially the Silk Roads.
Organize the information into:
1. Causes of the Growth of the Silk Roads
A. The Crusades
Series of wars from 1096–1291 fought over control of sacred areas.
European Christians traveled to Jerusalem.
Crusade routes crossed/intersected with the Silk Roads.
Europeans encountered and brought back Asian luxury goods such as silk, porcelain, and spices.
Explain the cause-and-effect relationship:
Crusades → Europeans encounter Asian goods → demand for Asian goods increases → trade increases.
B. The Mongol Empire
Mongols made huge efforts to expand their empire during the 13th century.
A majority of overland Silk Road routes came under Mongol control.
Mongols respected merchants.
Routes became safer and easier to travel.
Mongols improved road systems.
Older and recently unused routes were reopened.
Explain:
Mongol expansion → safer/more accessible trade routes → increased Silk Road trade.
C. Growing Demand for Luxury Goods
Upper classes wanted goods that could not be produced locally.
China wanted cotton, horses, and exotic fruits.
Europe and the Middle East wanted silk, porcelain, and tea.
Explain:
Greater demand for luxury goods → merchants have more incentive to trade → trade volume increases.
D. Technological Advancements and Improved Commercial Practices
Include:
Caravanserai: Rest stops where merchants could rest, obtain supplies, and prepare for the next part of their journey.
Caravanserai were especially important in the Gobi and Taklamakan deserts.
They were similar to modern truck stops with motels.
Improved transportation and maritime transportation made long-distance travel easier.
Money economies: Used standardized currency instead of relying mainly on barter.
Bills of exchange: Pieces of paper guaranteeing the holder a set amount of money on a certain date, allowing merchants to avoid carrying large amounts of coins.
2. Effects of the Growth of the Silk Roads
A. Rise of New Trading Cities and Oases
Important cities:
Kashgar
Samarkand
Hangzhou
Malacca
Timbuktu
Constantinople
Damascus
Explain why cities grew:
Merchants needed places to stop, rest, and resupply.
Cities near water became important stopping points.
Increased trade caused cities to become culturally diverse and home to multiple religions.
The growth of these cities was directly connected to the Silk Roads.
B. Spread of Goods, Beliefs, and Disease
Goods:
Cotton
Silk
Horses
Fruits
Porcelain
Gunpowder
Tea
Spices
Paper
Beliefs/religions:
Islam
Buddhism
Christianity
Disease:
Bubonic Plague / Black Death
Make clear that trade networks spread both beneficial things, such as goods and ideas, and harmful things, such as disease.
C. Change to Money Economies
Explain:
Barter economy: People exchange goods, commodities, or services directly.
Money economy: People use a standard form of currency to purchase goods.
Growing long-distance trade encouraged the use of money and commercial practices that made trade easier.
D. Increased Production and Urbanization
Commercialization and urbanization reinforced each other.
As trade increased, merchants and cities grew.
Increased demand encouraged greater production of goods.
Use the Song Dynasty as an example of the connection between commercialization and urbanization.
Explain that this pattern also occurred in regions connected by the Silk Roads.
Most Important Cause-and-Effect Chain

🐴 AP World 2.2 — Mongol Empire EASY SUMMARY
⭐ THE BIG IDEA
The Mongols were nomadic pastoralists from the Central Asian steppes who united under Genghis Khan and created the largest land-based empire in history.
Their expansion caused the Pax Mongolica, which made trade and communication across Eurasia easier and safer.
The main chain:
Mongols unite
⬇
Strong military
⬇
Massive expansion
⬇
Pax Mongolica
⬇
Safer Silk Roads
⬇
More trade + cultural exchange
1⃣ Who Were the Mongols?
The Mongols came from the East Asian steppes, in present-day Mongolia, north of the Gobi Desert.
They were nomadic pastoralists.
What does pastoral nomad mean?
They raised animals and moved from place to place depending on the seasons.
Why?
Because they needed enough grass and water to support their herds.
Different Mongol tribes often fought each other.
2⃣ Genghis Khan 👑
In 1206, the Mongol tribes were united under Temüjin.
He became known as:
Genghis Khan
Meaning roughly "Universal Ruler" / "Ruler of All."
He built his power through:
Tribal alliances
Conquering other groups
Incorporating conquered people into his army
Sharing war spoils
Meritocracy
Meritocracy =
People get positions based on their ability and skill, rather than simply their family background.
This was especially important in the Mongol military.
3⃣ Why Were the Mongols So Successful? ⚔
Your notes give you 4 major reasons.
🐴 A. Superior Military Tactics
Mongol soldiers were extremely skilled horsemen.
They used composite bows, which were powerful and effective.
They also had backup horses, allowing them to keep moving quickly.
🧠 B. Military Organization
The Mongols organized their army into hierarchical units.
Different groups had specific responsibilities.
Leaders were promoted based on merit.
Remember:
Best soldiers → best leaders
😨 C. Psychological Warfare
The Mongols intentionally created fear.
They sometimes destroyed cities and left a small number of survivors who could spread stories about the Mongols' power.
The goal:
Make other cities surrender without fighting.
🔄 D. Adaptability
The Mongols learned from the people they conquered.
They adopted useful:
Technologies
Military techniques
Administrative practices
This helped them conquer different types of societies.
4⃣ Why Did the Mongols Expand?
There were several factors.
🌱 Environmental pressure
Colder temperatures meant:
Less grass
⬇
Shorter growing season
⬇
Harder to support herds
⬇
Threat to nomadic life
This encouraged Mongol expansion.
⚔ Conflict with neighboring states
The Jin and Western Xia dynasties restricted trade with the Mongols.
This contributed to Mongol raids and eventually invasions.
5⃣ Mongol Expansion 🌎
Genghis Khan died in 1227.
His son Ögedei Khan formally took power in 1229.
Mongol expansion continued into:
China
Russia
Eastern Europe
Central Asia
Middle East
Eventually, they created the:
🏆 Largest Land-Based Empire in History
6⃣ Pax Mongolica 🕊
THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT THINGS TO REMEMBER.
Pax Mongolica = "Mongol Peace."
Mongol control created a period of relative peace and stability across much of Eurasia.
Why does this matter?
Before:
Different states + conflicts
⬇
Travel was dangerous
After Mongol expansion:
Large areas controlled by Mongols
⬇
Trade routes became safer
⬇
Silk Road trade increased
7⃣ What Spread During Pax Mongolica? 🌍
The Mongols helped increase the movement of:
📦 Goods
Silk
Spices
Porcelain
Horses
Tea
🕌 Religions
Islam
Tibetan Buddhism
Christianity
🧠 Ideas & Technology
Mathematics
Numbering systems
Medical knowledge
Writing systems
The Mongols adopted the Uyghur writing system, which became an important form of communication.
8⃣ Mongols & Religion ☪☸
The Mongols were generally tolerant of different religions.
They encouraged the spread of several religions, including:
Islam
Tibetan Buddhism
Christianity
Kublai Khan
Kublai Khan supported Tibetan Buddhism during the Yuan Dynasty.
9⃣ Mongols & the Silk Roads 🐫
This connects directly to your 2.1 material.
