Timeline of child language development:

  • 0-2 months - biological noises

  • 2-5 months - cooing and laughing

  • 5-8 months - vocal play

  • 6-12 months - babbling

  • 9-18 months - melodic utterance

  • 12 - 18 months - the holophrastic stage

    • single word utterances

  • 18-24 months - two word stage

    • 50+ words

    • starting to string words together

  • 2-3 years - telegraphic stage

    • string together 2,3,4,5+ words

    • lack of function words

    • mainly content words like nouns

  • around 3 years - pre-school years

    • langauge starts to dramatically change

    • start to use conjunctions

    • not fluent yet and so they tend to repeat themselves and find it hard to form whole sentences
