Major Parts of the Natural Nail
1. Nail Plate
Hardened keratin plate on top of the nail bed.

Free Edge: part that extends over the fingertip or toe.
2. Nail Bed
Portion of living skin supporting the nail plate.
Supplied with nerves; attached to the nail plate by bed epithelium.

3. Matrix
Area where nail plate cells are formed, nurturing new cell production.
Extends from under the nail fold at the base of the nail plate.
Lanula: the visible part of the matrix; not all matrix is visible.
4. Cuticle
Dead colorless tissue attached to the nail plate, comes from the skin above the nail.
Seals space between the nail plate and living skin to prevent entry of foreign substances.
Difficult to remove; cuticle removers help dissolve soft tissue for easier removal.
5. Eponychium
Living skin at the base of the nail plate, covering the matrix.
Often confused with the cuticle; it is not the same.
Nail technicians may gently push back eponychium, but must not cut or trim it.
6. Hyponychium
Thickened skin layer between fingertip and free edge of the nail plate.
Provides a barrier against microorganisms; damage can lead to separation of nail plate from nail bed.
Should be treated carefully to prevent infections.
7. Nail Folds
Skin folds surrounding the nail plate.
Sidewall: lateral nail fold overlapping the side of the nail.
