Bottom-Up and Top-Down Processing
Bottom-Up Processing
- Sensory receptors register external environmental information and send it to the brain for interpretation.
- It involves taking in information and trying to make sense of it, starting with the external world.
- Example: Listening carefully to an unfamiliar song to get a "feel" for it.
Top-Down Processing
- Starts with cognitive processing in the brain.
- Involves beginning with an existing framework or expectations and applying it to incoming information.
- Can be observed when expectations influence what is perceived (seen, heard, felt).
- Example: Listening to a familiar song with expectations of what comes next, or singing along.
