why was coming to university important to me?
coming to uni was important to me because secondary school provides a very generic education on a variety of subjects, and so I wanted the specialised teaching that uni provides, yet I would hate to come out with a newfound perspective of the world from that one specific area of expertise, whether that be a political viewpoint or an historical one…
why have I chosen to study Liberal Arts?
…therefore, I chose Liberal Arts because I can then access specialised knowledge across a range of subjects, allowing me to then think critically about global issues and topics in a holistic way. For instance, if I were merely an English Literature student, the answer I may have provided to the Summer Course question of what the greatest issue we have today is, would likely have been a response in relation to what written records we have, and maybe how such records are contextualised and applied in contemporary life. Alternatively, as a Psychology student, issues such as the effect that increased access to internet and social media is having on the way we think might be an issue of larger concern. As a Liberal Arts student, I hope to be able to learn from all these different perspectives, and then form well-rounded opinions on a variety of topics
what ‘knowledge’ am I bringing to my degree?
for my A-Levels, I studied English Literature, Religious Studies and Politics, and my GCSEs, as well as my personal interests all come together to provide the knowledge I currently hold, which I’m bringing to this degree.
