Paradigm

• Set of concepts and theories that frame you perspective on a certain topic

• Fundamental assumptions that sociologist have about the social world

• Help interpret raw facts

• All sciences have them

• Sociology has three main ones

  • Structural functionalism

  • Conflict perspectives 

  • Symbolic interactionism 

Structural functionalism

• Assumes that society is a complex system whose parts work together to promote stability and social order

• Society is like an organism

• Davis and moore's functional theory of stratification (inequality and stratification are universal and necessary)

• Functional imperatives by parsons (AGIL)

  • Adaptation

  • Goal attainment

  • Innergration

  • Latency and pattern 

• Merton criticized structural functionalism while still reminding in the SF paradigm (dysfunction non function and latent and manifest functions)
