Lesson 4: Adjectives and Adverbs

• Adjectives and adverbs are words that play an essential role in enhancing the richness and clarity of writing. Using adjectives and adverbs helps writers craft vivid and descriptive sentences, allowing them to paint a more detailed and nuanced picture of the world around them.
• Adjectives are used to describe nouns and pronouns. Adverbs are used to describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.

ADJECTIVES
- words that describe nouns or pronouns.
- provide additional information about the qualities, characteristics, or attributes of
the noun or pronoun they modify.
- often answer these questions:
• What kind?
• Which one?
• How many?
• How much?

TYPES OF ADJECTIVES:
1. DESCRIPTIVE ADJECTIVES
- describe the qualities of a noun.

Examples:
~ beautiful, intelligent, tall, blue, enormous

2. DEMONSTRATIVE ADJECTIVES
- indicate which specific noun is being referred to.

Examples:
~ this, that, these, those

3. POSSESSIVE ADJECTIVES
- show ownership.

Examples:
~ its, our, their, his, her

ADJECTIVE PLACEMENTS
• When writing sentences, the most common
place to use an adjective is before the noun
it modifies.

Example:
~ dedicated student

• When using two adjectives to describe a
noun, you may need to place a comma
between them.

Example:
~ long, narrow road

ADVERBS
- words that describe or modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs in a sentence.
- adds depth and help enhance the reader's
understanding of the actions described within the sentence.
- often answer these questions:
• How?
• Where?
• When?
• Why?

TYPES OF ADVERBS
1. ADBERB OF MANNER
- describes how an action is performed or how something happens.

Example:
~ Anna laughed loudly.

2. ADVERBS OF TIME
- describe when something happens.

Example:
~ “yesterday”, “today”, “tomorrow”

~ I’m going to see my friend Sally today.

3. ADVERB OF PLACE
- provides information about the location of an action.

Example:
~ position, distance, direction

~ Hey, come here!

4. ADVERB OF FREQUENCY
- describes how often an action happens.
- six main adverbs of frequency that we use in English:
~ always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never.

Example:
~ Olivia usually exercises.

ADVERB PLACEMENT
• Adverbs are frequently placed before the main verb in a sentence.

Example:
~ She quickly ran to the store.

• Adverbs may be placed at the end of a
sentence to add emphasis.

Example:
~ The team worked diligently.

Bad vs. Badly
— BAD
- is an adjective used to tell us about the
quality of a noun.

Examples:
~ The storm caused bad flooding.
~ That is a bad smell.

— BADLY
- is an adverb that describes how an action
is performed.
Examples:
~ The athlete was badly injured.
~ She sang badly at the concert.
