-born of a christian family in Roman Africa

-as a young girl she married an older man, Patricius, who was pagan and later converted

-bore four children

-prayed and cried for her oldest son, Augustine, to accept the christian faith

-died in ostia after witnessing Augustine’s baptism

-Son of christian mother monica and pagan father patricius in North Africa

-led a sinful life and had a son with his mistress

-son was adeodatus which means gift of god

-heard bishop ambrose preach in Milan because of his mothers encouragement

-baptized at 33 by ambrose; ordained priest at 36 and bishop at 41

-preached and wrote about the truth against heresies

-one of the 37 doctors of the church
