Fractions, Decimals, Percents, and Rounding Rules

Converting Fractions and Decimals

  • Converting Fractions to Decimals:

    • Divide the numerator by the denominator (Numerator÷Denominator\text{Numerator} \div \text{Denominator}).

  • Converting Decimals to Fractions:

    • Decimals can be calculated and converted back into fractional parts.

Percentage Conversions

  • Definition of Percent:

    • Percents are values defined as parts out of 100100

  • Converting Percents to Decimals:

    • Divide the given percentage value by 100100 (Percent÷100\text{Percent} \div 100).

Classifications of Decimal Numbers

  • Terminating Decimals:

    • Decimal numbers that stop and have a finite number of digits.

  • Repeating Decimals:

    • Decimal numbers that contain digits or patterns of digits that repeat forever without stopping.

Rules for Rounding Decimals

  • Locating the Rounding Digit:

    • Identify the target place value to be rounded.

    • Look directly behind (to the immediate right of) the target place value digit.

  • Rounding Down / Staying the Same:

    • If the digit directly behind the target place value is less than 55 (00, 11, 22, 33, or 44), the target place value number stays the same.

  • Rounding Up:

    • If the digit directly behind the target place value is 55 or greater (55, 66, 77, 88, or 99), round the target place value number up.

Calculator Usage

  • Calculators are used to carry out division operations for converting fractions to decimals, converting percentages, and executing rounding procedures.
