The Nature and Use of Research
- Definition of Research: At its core, research is gathering information to answer a question that solves a problem. We do this in daily life (e.g., finding a car part via the yellow pages, checking a birthdate on Google). Formal research allows participation in an esteemed human conversation to free communities from ignorance and prejudice.
- The World's Biggest Industry: Research is conducted everywhere—labs, libraries, jungles, ocean depths, space, and homes. Success in almost any profession depends on evaluating and reporting information clearly.
- The Importance of Writing: Research is written up for several crucial reasons:
- To Remember: Notes prevent loss of information.
- To Understand: Arranging results reveals new implications and connections.
- To Test Thinking: Ideas often seem more compelling in the mind than they do in the cold light of print. Fixing them in organized form allows for objective evaluation.
- Formal Genres: Standard forms (research papers, reports, white papers) are not just empty vessels; they embody specific ways of working and help researchers organize their thoughts and meet reader expectations.
Connecting with Your Reader
- Imagined Conversation: Writing is a social activity where the writer creates a persona for themselves and a role for the reader.
- The Researcher's Role: In true research, you must move beyond the role of a student digging up facts for a grade. You learn something others do not know and give them a reason to want to know it.
- Information Role: "I have found new and interesting information."
- Practical Problem Role: "I have a solution to a problem you care about."
- Conceptual Question Role: "I have an answer that will help you understand something better."
- The Reader's Role:
- Entertain Me: Interested in trivia and anecdotes (e.g., a local hobby club).
- Help Me Solve a Practical Problem: Needs specific, reliable facts to take action (e.g., a film crew needing historical accuracy).
- Help Me Understand Something Better: Expects objectivity, rigorous logic, and a contribution to existing knowledge (the standard academic reader).
Asking Questions, Finding Answers
Moving from Topics to Questions
- Broad Topic vs. Focused Topic: A topic is too broad if it can be stated in four or five words (e.g., "Free will in Tolstoy"). It becomes focused by adding "action" nouns derived from verbs (e.g., "The conflict of free will and inevitability in Tolstoy's description of three battles in War and Peace").
- Questioning the Topic: Use journalistic questions (who, what, where, when) and deeper ones (how and why) to evaluate the topic's history, structure, and categories.
- The "So What?" Question: This is the most significant step. Why does the answer matter?
- Step 1: Name the topic ("I am studying the causes of mammal disappearance…").
- Step 2: Add an indirect question ("…because I want to find out whether they were hunted to extinction…").
- Step 3: Motivate the question ("…in order to help my reader understand whether native peoples lived in harmony with nature").
Understanding Research Problems
- Practical Problem: Caused by a condition in the world with a tangible cost (time, money, security). Solved by doing something.
- Conceptual (Research) Problem: Caused by not knowing or understanding something. Its "cost" is a consequence of ignorance—not being able to understand something even more important. Solved by answering a question.
- Pure vs. Applied Research:
- Pure: Aims only at understanding for a community of researchers.
- Applied: Aims at a solution that has practical consequences in the world.
Finding and Engaging Sources
- Three Kinds of Sources:
- Primary: Original raw data (letters, diaries, artifacts, lab results).
- Secondary: Peer-reviewed books and articles by experts who analyze primary data.
- Tertiary: Synthesized information for general readers (textbooks, Wikipedia).
- Evaluating Reliability: Look for reputable presses, peer review, reputable authors, currency, and citations/bibliographies.
- Engaging Sources Actively: Read generously first to understand, then critically to find problems. Look for "Creative Agreement" (extending a claim) or "Creative Disagreement" (identifying contradictions of kind, part-whole, history, or cause-effect).
- Note-Taking: Always record complete bibliographical information first. Unambiguously distinguish between (1) direct quotes, (2) paraphrases/summaries, and (3) your own thoughts.
Making an Argument
The Core of a Research Argument
- Claim: Your answer to the research question.
- Reasons: Assertions that support the claim, often linked by "because."
- Evidence: The bedrock of fact that supports the reasons. You don't "think up" evidence; you find it.
- Acknowledgment and Response: Anticipating reader skepticism and alternatives.
- Warrant: The underlying principle that connects a reason to a claim (the logic).
Making Claims and Assembling Evidence
- Evaluating Claims: They must be specific (precise language) and significant (asking readers to change what they think).
- Qualifying Claims: Use "hedges" (words like probably, suggest, indicate) to limit certainty and preserve credibility.
- Evaluating Evidence: It must be accurate, precise, sufficient, representative, and authoritative.
Warrants: The Logic of Connection
- Structure: A warrant has two parts: a general circumstance and a general consequence. If the specific reason falls under the general circumstance, then the specific claim follows from the general consequence.
- When to State: State warrants if your audience is outside your field, if the principle of reasoning is controversial, or if you make a claim readers will resist.
Writing and Organizing
Planning and Drafting
- Structure for Reports: Introduction – Methods and Materials – Results – Discussion – Conclusion.
- The "Storyboarding" Method: Write the main claim and each reason at the top of cards/pages, then list supporting evidence below. Arrange them to visualize the logical flow.
- Introduction Elements: (1) Contextualizing background (common ground), (2) Statement of the problem (destabilizing condition and consequence), (3) Response (main point or launching point).
- Conclusion Elements: (1) Restate main point, (2) Add new significance or application, (3) Call for more research.
Revising Style
- Subjects and Characters: Readers find writing clearer when subjects are short, concrete characters rather than abstract nouns.
- Verbs and Actions: Express crucial actions in verbs rather than nouns (avoid "nominalization").
- Old Before New: Start sentences with familiar information that your readers have already encountered; put new, complex, or emphatic information at the end.
- Voice: Use the passive voice to move older information to the beginning of a sentence. Use the active voice and "I/We" for actions only the researcher can perform (e.g., we conclude).
Ethics and Final Considerations
- Ethics of Research: Research is a profoundly social activity. Ethical researchers do not plagiarize, misreport, invent data, or conceal objections.
- Plagiarism: It is theft of more than words—it steals the modest recognition a researcher struggles for and weakens the entire research community.
