Vocabulary Terms

Happiness: Fulfillment or attainment of a desired good.
Self-consciousness: Awareness of oneself as distinct and consistent over time.
Ego: Inner self, a term from Sigmund Freud.
Self-Actualization: Becoming who God created us to be, involving freedom, self-discipline, and commitment.
Grace: Divine life that God gives human persons.
Interior Call: Awareness of God's drawing us to Himself internally.
Exterior Call: Awareness of God's drawing us to Himself externally.
Unhappiness: Non-fulfillment of desire.
Silver Rule: Do not do unto others what you do not want done to you.
Conscience: Inner attraction to goodness and justice; aversion to evil.

Human Liberty: Vital for making moral choices and attaining the highest good or committing evil.
Nobler State of Will: Christ raises human dignity through His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
Misunderstanding of Church's Role: Belief that the Church is hostile to human liberty misinterprets true freedom as the ability to choose good, true, and beautiful things.

Need for Art: Communicates the message of Christ; makes the spiritual world tangible.
Images Used by Christ: Includes Heaven, the mustard seed, and His Body as the temple.
Types of Artists Needed: Painters, writers, musicians, architects;
- Artists find inspiration in Church's teachings.

Universal Desire: Asks if one would prefer truth over falsehood, highlights the desire for truth.
Definition of Happy Life: Joy in the truth, which is ultimately God.

Source of Gifts: Heart opened by closeness to others and seeking their welfare.
Missionary Happiness: True happiness is found in seeking the good of others.
Response to Self-Destructive Behavior: Love, kindness, prayer, and truth defensiveness.

Obstacles to True Happiness: Many unavoidable evils due to fallen condition; perfect happiness is not attainable in this life.
Vision of Divine Essence: Understanding of Heaven.
Desire for Good: Humans inherently wish for lasting good experiences.
