Degrees of Burns

First Degree Burns

  • Definition: Superficial burns that affect only the epidermis.

  • Characteristics:

    • Similar to sunburn.

    • Skin remains intact; appears reddened and painful but doesn't blister.

Second Degree Burns

  • Definition: Partial thickness burns that penetrate the dermis partly.

  • Characteristics:

    • Extremely painful because it involves nerve endings in the dermis.

    • Skin may blister and appears red, swollen, and wet due to fluid loss.

    • Damage includes both the epidermis and part of the dermis, but nerves are still intact.

    • Most painful of all burn types because nerves remain functional in the affected area.

Third Degree Burns

  • Definition: Full thickness burns that reach the deepest layers of skin.

  • Characteristics:

    • May appear charred or leathery and is typically painless due to damage to nerve endings.

    • Can affect underlying tissues, including bones, muscles, tendons, and nerves.

    • No sensation in the burned area due to the destruction of nerve endings.

Types of Burns

Thermal Burns

  • Overview: Most common type of burns caused by heat.

  • Factors: Severity determined by heat level and contact time.

Chemical Burns

  • Overview: Burns caused by acids or alkalis.

  • Concerns: Can cause severe damage to skin and eyes.

    • Requires careful management to prevent long-term tissue damage.

Electrical Burns

  • Definition: Caused by electric current, including lightning strikes.

  • Concerns: Can cause internal damage that is not always visually apparent.

Radiation Burns

  • Types: Can be ionizing (like X-rays) or non-ionizing (like sunlight).

Zones of Burns in Full Thickness or Partial Thickness Burn

Zone of Hyperemia

  • Location: Outermost layer.

  • Overview: Contains increased blood flow, indicating potential recovery area.

Zone of Stasis

  • Location: Middle area within the burn.

  • Overview: Potentially salvageable; requires immediate care to prevent further damage.

Zone of Coagulation

  • Location: Innermost area.

  • Overview: Most severely damaged; characterized by necrotic tissue due to maximum contact with the heat source.
