Treatment for Auditory Comprehension

  • Principle: Auidtory bomvardment in heirarchy

Level 1: Pick up the pencil

Level 2: Bring me the green cup and then the blue cup

Level 3: Bring me the book to the left of the pencil

  • Isolated deficits in auditory comprehension are rare; usually involve mixed language deficits.

  • Limited empirical treatment studies; mostly single case studies.

  • Restorative Approaches:

    • Schuell’s stimulation approach focuses on restoring damaged language functions.

  • Compensatory Approaches:

    • Context-based methods like PACE to facilitate effective communication.

Schuell’s Stimulation Approach

  • Goals: Improve auditory comprehension, with hopes of generalizing skills.

  • Can start by using written cues (make sure to read them, and that the person knows how to read) NO GESTURES!!

Wernicke’s Aphasia

  • Objective: 

  • Principle: Using natural conversational skills (“Before you move on, can you tell me more about what you just said?, Can you repeat that? Can you speak a little slower?”

  • Outcome: How many strategies were used, or how independently they utilizing the strategies
