shows the management hierarchy in business and works top to bottom.

shows;

  • span of control - number of employees managers are responsible for/ directly lead

  • line management - responsibility for directly managing individual employees/teams

  • chain of command - organisational structure that explains how people relate to each other and who they report to.

==top down organisation chart== - e.g military

==flat/horiztonal structure-== most layers of management are cut out, close relationship between the top and the employees. more common is smaller companies. employees feel stronger sense of teamwork and autonomy.

use;

  • organisation and communication - employees can know who to report to
  • restructuring - switching roles to better utilise everyone’s talents
  • workforce planning- know details for hiring initiative
  • resource planning - reduce inefficiencies by changing roles

limitations;

  • become out of date quick
  • only show formal relationships
  • don’t reflect management style - show lines of authority but now how its used
