Chapter 4 +5
The Story of Charles II: A Royal Rollercoaster
Once upon a time in England, Charles I became king in 1625. He married a fancy French princess named Henrietta Maria, but the English folks were not too happy because she was Catholic and they were mostly Protestant. The grumpy protestors, known as the Puritans, complained about it a lot!
When Parliament tried to tell King Charles I what to do, he got so fed up that he shut it down in 1629 and decided to rule all on his own for 11 years. That was like saying, "I’m the boss, and you can’t argue with me!"
But of course, that didn’t go well. After a while, people started fighting - this led to the English Civil War from 1642 to 1649! On one side, we had Charles I and his loyal friends (the Royalists) and on the other side, the fierce Oliver Cromwell leading the Parliamentary troops. It was quite the drama!
After much battling, Cromwell won, and Charles I was charged with treason and... got his head cut off! With no king, England tried out a new idea and became a republic, meaning no monarch rule. Cromwell took charge, but some people thought he was acting like a dictator - very uncool!
In 1658, Cromwell died, and his son Richard was not as good at handling things. The people were fed up and said, "Let’s bring back a king!" So in 1660, they called back Charles II, the son of the no-longer-living Charles I, and made him king again. This event is called the Restoration, and it was like the happy ending everyone hoped for in this royal saga!
