Biological Drawings

  • Simplify, emphasize, summarize, and clarify.

Do's

  • Use blank paper and pencil.
  • Drawing occupies 2/3 of page.
  • Underlined title, centered, indicating cell/tissue/organ type, section, and stain.
  • Draw only what is observed.
  • Drawing left of center.
  • Proportional components.
  • Clean, definite, continuous lines; no sketching.
  • Stippling for contrast; no shading.
  • No open circles.
  • Horizontal, lowercase labels aligned to the right with a ruler.
  • Calculations:
    • Total magnification: (ocular lens×objective lens)(\text{ocular lens} \times \text{objective lens}) in top right corner.
    • Drawing magnification under the drawing.
  • Correct, underlined title as a full sentence explaining the view.

Don'ts

  • No shading; use stippling.
  • No sketchy lines; use a ruler for labeling.
  • No plural terms for single features.
