Atmospheric Layers Overview
Layers of the Atmosphere
Troposphere
- Definition: The lowest layer of Earth's atmosphere.
- Characteristics:
- Weather phenomena occur in this layer.
- Contains most of the atmosphere's mass.
- Temperature: Decreases with altitude; average temperature drops with higher elevation.
Stratosphere
- Purpose: Houses the ozone layer, which protects Earth from the sun's harmful ultraviolet radiation.
- Characteristics:
- Temperature increases with altitude due to the absorption of radiation by the ozone layer.
- Composed of ozone (O3), which filters harmful solar radiation.
Mesosphere
- Definition: The layer above the stratosphere and below the thermosphere.
- Characteristics:
- Coldest layer of the atmosphere, with temperatures dropping to around -80°C.
- Temperature decreases with altitude.
- Meteors burn up in this layer due to friction with atmospheric particles.
Thermosphere
- Definition: The layer of the atmosphere closest to outer space.
- Characteristics:
- Temperature increases significantly with altitude; can exceed 1000°C due to solar activity.
- Contains a small amount of air and can support the flow of ionized gases.
General Function of the Atmosphere
- Protection: The atmosphere plays a critical role in protecting Earth from cosmic and solar radiation.
- Ozone Layer: Specifically absorbs harmful UV radiation, preventing it from reaching the surface and causing damage to living organisms.
Overall, each layer of the atmosphere serves distinct purposes and contributes to the Earth's climate and ecological systems.
