Pelvis Anatomy

  • Bones of the Pelvis: Three main bones include the ilium, ischium, and pubis.

    • Ilium: Largest of the three bones, located above the acetabulum. No sutural lines can be seen, making it difficult to identify as separate bones.

    • Acetabulum: Important landmark where the head of the femur fits.

    • Ischium: Contains the ischial tuberosity (site where one sits). Positioned posteriorly and inferiorly.

    • Pubis: Located anteriorly and includes the pubic symphysis, which is a fibrocartilaginous disc between the right and left pubic bones.

  • Obturator Foramen: A large hole in the pelvis, significant for anatomical orientation.

Major Landmarks on the Ilium

  • Iliac Crest: The top edge of the ilium, provides strength and surface area for muscle attachment.

  • Anterior Superior Iliac Spine (ASIS): Marker for the bony prominence at the front of the ilium, easy to palpate near where a belt sits.

  • Greater Sciatic Notch: Large notch in the ilium, serves as a passage for nerves and blood vessels.

  • Ischial Spine: Bony projection separating the greater and lesser sciatic notches.

  • Lesser Sciatic Notch: Smaller notch associated with various anatomical features.

Femur Anatomy

  • Head of Femur: Articulates with the acetabulum; contains a ligament that may house an artery.

  • Trochanters:

    • Greater Trochanter: Large bony prominence important for muscle attachment (gluteus maximus).

    • Lesser Trochanter: Smaller, located below the greater trochanter; associated with iliopsoas muscle.

  • Linea Aspera: A ridge along the femur indicative of muscle attachment; it is broad at the origin and narrow at the insertions.

  • Condylar Surfaces: Distal end of the femur features medial and lateral condyles, crucial for knee articulation.

Tibia and Fibula

  • Tibia Anatomy:

    • Tibial Tuberosity: Located on the anterior surface; insertion point for the patellar ligament.

    • Condyles: Includes medial and lateral condyles for knee articulation.

    • Malleolus:

      • Medial Malleolus: Distal end of the tibia; recognizable bump on the inside of the ankle.

      • Lateral Malleolus: The end of the fibula, located on the outer aspect of the ankle.

  • Fibula: The smaller bone, providing lateral support to the ankle; includes the lateral malleolus.

Foot Anatomy

  • Calcaneus: Largest bone in the foot, important for weight-bearing and movement.

  • Talus: Plays a critical role in ankle movement, located between the tibia and calcaneus.

  • Tarsal Bones: Includes seven bones; recognition of the talus and calcaneus is crucial.

  • Navicular Bone: Named for its boat-like shape; it participates in foot structure and function.

  • Cuneiforms and Cuboid: Additional tarsals crucial for foot structure.
