Maximillien Robespierre

Robespierre was known as “the incorruptable” because he was believed to be completely honest and sincere.

As the war worsened, he believed that a ruthless government and harsh punishments were needed to protect the revolution. He was elected as the leader of the Committee of Public Safety in 1793 and held almost complete power during the Reign of Terror.

He introduced the Law of Suspect. This meant that anyone who was suspected to be against the revolution would be executed via the guillatine. Thousands of innocent people were killed. He also put our the Law of Maximum which aimed to lower food prices. He was eventually executed as the Committee believed he was being too extreme.
