  • Hyper-inflation caused by Weimar gov’t trying to solve economic issues by printing more money - Germany mark becomes worthless

  • Corporations preferred fascism over communism

  • Rage and humiliation due to TOV and war gov’t clause

  • Germany wants a saviour

Hitlers Rise to Power (Long AF)

  1. Attempted a Coup

    • Munich Beer Hall Putsch - 1923

    • Arrested, 5 year sentence to jail

  2. Mein Kampf (My Struggle - a book he wrote)

    • Writes this while in jail (1923-1924)

    • his views; anti-democracy, anti-parliaments, anti-human rights, anti-diversity, anti-western powers

    • his views pt2; pro-dictatorship, pro-ultranationalism, pro-German revival of power

  3. Released from Jail

    • Judge sympathizes with his views, early release

      • agrees with blaming the west for TOV, thinks Germany deserves greatness

  4. Joins NSDAP

    • National Socialism German Workers Party

    • Trying to get elected, patriotism filled speeches, and scapegoating

  5. NSDAP wins in 1933

    • Hitler becomes Chancellor

  6. Reichstag Fire

    • German parliament is burned down

    • Hitler blames the 2nd strongest political part in Germany, the communisty

  1. Enabling Act

    • Hitler evokes Germany’s emergency legislation

      • he never rescinds this law, used it to turn Germany into a dictatorship

  2. Implements Domestic Policy

    • VOLK community - citizenship by blood

    • Only ethnically pure blooded Germans have rights

      • Jews declared vermin (anti-semitism)

    • Nuremberg Laws (1935) inter-racial sexual contact and marriage is illegal, declares an Aryan master race

      • Aryan = superior (white people), Semit = inferior

  3. Ultra-Nationalist Violence

    • 1938 - Kristallnacht - Night of the Broken GLass

      • Jews are attacked, beaten, killed, shops destroyed, synagogues burned (religious building), and rounded up and sent to concentration camps

  4. Implements Foreign Policy

    • Lebensraum - expansionism to get more living space for Germans

    • Anschluss (union) with Austria (1938)

    • Takes Sudetenland (1939)

    • Takes Czechoslovakia (1939)

  5. Nazi-Soviet Non-Agression Pact

    • 1939 - deal shocks the world (Nazis and Communists, Germany and Soviet Russia)

      • Public deal = will not attack each other

      • Secret deal = Hitler invades Poland, Soviet Russia takes half

  6. Invasion of Poland

    • Start of WWII

    • Blitzkrieg Warfare - entire cities leveled

      • Mass crimes against humanity

      • Blitz = lightning (fast), Kreig = war

  7. Genocide

    • 1941 - final solution, moved from the ghettos to death camps

    • Hitler has his state security and Gestapo (secret police) run death camps

      • Jews were worked to death or killed in gas chambers with Zyklon B

    • Extermination of the Jewish race in Europe was the goal

    • Called the Holocaust (Shoah)
