Spanish II Test — Study Notes

1. Greetings & Basic Expressions

Hola = Hello
Buenos días = Good morning
Buenas tardes = Good afternoon
Buenas noches = Good evening / Good night

¿Cómo estás? = How are you?
¿Cómo está usted? = How are you? (formal)
¿Qué tal? = How's it going?

¿Cómo te llamas? = What is your name?
Me llamo... = My name is...

Mucho gusto = Nice to meet you
Gracias = Thank you
De nada = You're welcome
Por favor = Please

Hasta luego = See you later
Nos vemos = See you
Adiós = Goodbye

Example conversation

A: ¡Hola! ¿Cómo te llamas?
B: Me llamo Carlos. ¿Y tú?
A: Me llamo Ana. Mucho gusto.
B: Mucho gusto.
A: ¿Cómo estás?
B: Muy bien, gracias. ¿Y tú?

2. SER — Present Tense

SER = "to be"

Use the present tense when someone/something IS that way now.

Examples

Yo soy estudiante. = I am a student.
Tú eres mi amigo. = You are my friend.
Ana es de México. = Ana is from Mexico.
Nosotros somos amigos. = We are friends.
Ellos son estudiantes. = They are students.

3. SER — Preterite/Past Tense

Use the preterite when SER describes a completed situation in the past.

Examples

Yo fui estudiante. = I was a student.

Ellos fueron estudiantes. = They were students.

4. SER: Present vs. Preterite

This is a BIG section on the study guide.

Look for words that tell you when something happened.

PRESENT clues

hoy = today
ahora = now

Examples:

Hoy yo soy estudiante.
Today I am a student.

Ahora ellos son mis amigos.
Now they are my friends.

PRETERITE clues

la semana pasada = last week
el mes pasado = last month

Examples:

La semana pasada tú fuiste el líder.
Last week you were the leader.

El mes pasado ellos fueron estudiantes.
Last month they were students.

EASY RULE

NOW → soy, eres, es, somos, son

PAST/COMPLETED → fui, fuiste, fue, fuimos, fueron


5. SABER vs. CONOCER

Both can mean "to know," but they're used for DIFFERENT things.

Use SABER for:

Knowing how to do something

Examples

Yo sé la respuesta.
I know the answer.

We know the information.

IMPORTANT

When saying you know how to do something, use:

SABER + infinitive

sé hablar = I know how to speak
sabe cocinar = he/she knows how to cook
sabemos usar = we know how to use


6. CONOCER

Use CONOCER for being familiar/acquainted with:

People
Places
Cities
Restaurants / familiar things

⚠ YO is irregular: CONOZCO

Examples

Yo conozco a María.
I know María.

Ellos conocen México.
They know/are familiar with Mexico.


7. SABER vs. CONOCER — Quick Trick

Ask yourself:

Is it a FACT, ANSWER, INFORMATION, or HOW TO?

➡ SABER

I know the answer.
→ Yo sé la respuesta.

I know how to cook.
→ Yo sé cocinar.

Do you know where the school is?
→ ¿Tú sabes dónde está la escuela?

Is it a PERSON, PLACE, or something you're FAMILIAR WITH?

➡ CONOCER

I know María.
→ Yo conozco a María.

She knows Madrid.
→ Ella conoce Madrid.

We know that restaurant.
→ Nosotros conocemos ese restaurante.
