Short Term Memory

Second store - where information is stored if attention is paid to it and is the second store in the memory

Rehearsal - information is retained and encoded through rehearsal to be transferred to the long term memory

Small capacity - the short term memory has a very small capacity with space to remember 7 ± 2 items at a time

Short duration - the short term memory has a short duration of around 18-30 seconds but can be helped with rehearsal

Conscious and aware - the information held in the short term memory must be consciously remembered and rehearsed to keep it in the short term memory and commit it to the long term memory

7±2 - the average number of items that could be held in the short term memory is around 7 but can vary from 5-9 giving the number 7±2 it's relevance

The short term memory is memory that holds a very limited number of items due to its small capacity of ~7±2 items with a short duration of ~18 seconds which can be refreshed through rehearsal which can help to encode information to transfer it to the long term memory.
