Muhammad
Allah began the revelation at the Cave of Hira.
The whole revelation of the Quran took 23 years.
Some wrote it down on bones and leaves.
In the early years, Muslims memorized it.
Recording Revelations During the Prophet's Time
When Prophet Muhammad (SAW) received a revelation, he dictated it to a companion, who wrote it down on anything available (bark, stone, bones, leaves, etc.).
If there were any mistakes, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) would correct them and then present it to everyone.
Prophet Muhammad (SAW) also specified the order of the verses.
During the Prophet's (SAW) time, one copy of the Quran existed, written under his personal supervision, but it was not in book form (it was in different parchments).
Other companions had personal collections of the Quran, but no standard copy in book form existed.
Styles during the time of Prophet Muhammad (SAW)
Styles during the time of Prophet Muhammad(SAW) on parchment's, camel bones, leather sheets.
Second stage of collection of Quran
After the battle of Yamama, many companions who were Hafiz were martyred.
This lead to the need for collecting the Quran.
In this stage, the Quran was collected in the form of a book called MUSHAF, a name given by Abdullah ibn Masood (RA).
This Mushaf was kept with Hafsa (RA).
Omar (RA) and Zaid (RA) followed a specific methodology in collecting Quran.
What was written before the Prophet(SAW) in his presence.
What was memorized by the companions.
It took 15 months to complete the Quran, and it was completed before the death of Abu Bakar (RA).
Second stage of collection of Quran: Compilation of the Holy Quran
Many huffaz died during the Battle of Yamama.
Umar (RA) proposed compiling the Quran.
Zaid bin Thabit headed the compilation task.
Uthman (RA) made copies of the compilation.
Third stage of collection of Quran
The original copy of Quran is now retained in Istanbul. We read from the copies made by the Usman Mushafs.
Usman (RA) designated a committee to collect the Quran headed by Zaid ibn Thabit (RA).
When any member of the committee differed on writing in a particular harf, they adopted the style of QURAYSH.
Usman (RA) ordered to burn all other styles and keep only one mushafs.
The nation followed this Mushafs and took them as principles for writing mushafs in successive generations.
Reason for Burning Different Styles of Mushafs
The burning of the Qur'an was done to respectfully dispose of unofficial copies of the Qur'an.
The official compilation took place within two years after the death of Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
This official recension of the Qur'an was not made obligatory upon the entire Caliphate.
People would simply copy with their own hands any copy that they had, and human errors occurred.
The Arabic script was not fully developed, so one symbol or letter could represent many things.

Reflection on Ayah (49:1-2)
Believers, do not advance before Allah and His Messenger, and fear Allah. Verily Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Believers, do not raise your voices above the voice of the Prophet and when speaking to him do not speak aloud as you speak aloud to one another, lest all your deeds are reduced to nothing without your even realizing it.
Question: Was making Quran into a Musaf, advancing before Allah and His Messenger? Justify your answer.
Justification
Advancing before Allah and his messenger means seeking to draw close to Allah by means of acts of worship for which there is no precedent (in sharee’ah).
The Qur’an was compiled in people’s hearts and it was compiled on tablets kept by some of the Sahaabah.
Compiling all of it in one place or on one tablet does not involve anything that is to be denounced.
Rather it is Sunnah such as the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) enjoined us to adhere to when he said: “I urge you to adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the Rightly-Guided caliphates (Khalifah) after me.” (Narrated by al-Tirmidhi, 2676; Abu Dawood, 4607; Ibn Maajah, 42. (This is one of the Sunnahs of the Rightly-Guided Khaleefah Abu Bakr al- Siddeeq (may Allah be pleased with him).
Dua for ending the class.
Purity belongs to Allah, and all praise be to Him. Purity belongs to You O Allah and all praise be to You. I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship besides You. I beg forgiveness from You and I repent before You.
