Yeast Cells

Yeast cells are single-celled fungi

  • They are living cells

  • They have a nucleus, cell membrane, cytoplasm and cell wall

  • They reproduce by budding (= a type of asexual reproduction)

  • They carry out respiration

Yeast are often used in experiments because they can perform anaerobic respiration (fermentation)

Glucose —> Ethanol + Carbon Dioxide (+ Energy)

This is why yeast is used in:

  • Bread making (CO2 makes the dough rise)

  • Brewing (ethanol is produced)

Yeast are single-celled fungi that respire and reproduce by budding

Bacteria = prokaryotic (no nucleus)

Yeast = eukaryotic (has a nucleus)

Plant cells = eukaryotic

Animal cells = eukaryotic
