The Americans faced tough challenges after declaring independence, but their determination eventually led to success. In August 1776, during the Battle of Long Island, Washington skillfully retreated across the Delaware River, allowing his troops to escape despite British General Howe's chances to defeat them. Later, Washington’s forces nearly collapsed due to a lack of supplies, but he achieved a surprise victory at Trenton on December 26, capturing over 900 British soldiers. Another win at Princeton followed, boosting American morale.
Despite setbacks, including a defeat at Brandywine and a harsh winter at Valley Forge, 1777 marked a turning point. British General Burgoyne's attempt to invade faced strong American resistance. He was ultimately surrounded and surrendered his army on October 17, 1777, marking a significant victory for the Americans.
